Guwahati: The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 has highlighted a notable increase in school enrolment in rural Assam and significant improvement in digital literacy and better learning outcome compared to the 2022 ASER results. The survey, facilitated by Pratham foundation, covered 24,275 children across 780 villages in 26 districts. The 14th nationwide field based ASER survey was conducted across over 17,000 villages across the country, comprising over 6.49 lakh students in the age group of 3-16 years. The ASER results released on Tuesday has shown a rising trend in enrolment in early childhood education programs or preschools in the state. The survey conducted in three groups -- young children (under 6 years), school goers (age 6-14) and older children (age 15-16) -- has shown a promising trend. Among children aged three years, preschool enrolment has reached 89.8 % in 2024, compared to 84.7% in 2022. Similarly, among children aged four years, enrolment is found to be 92.6% in 2024, which was 89.6% in 2022. Among children aged five years, enrolment in preschool was 69.2% in 2022, which increased to 71.7% in 2024. In 2024, 81.1% of children aged 3 years and 68% of children aged 4 years were enrolled in Anganwadis in rural Assam, compared to 66.8% of children aged 3 years and 57.7% of children aged 4 years at the national level. The survey has shown that the underage enrolment has dropped sharply since 2018 across all types of schools. The drop is sharper in govt schools. Enrolment in private schools has been increasing since 2014. Pratham Foundation's northeast zonal manager Trishna Lekharu told TOI that the survey conducted in 2024 mainly focused on right enrolment of children according to their ages and digital literacy. "The result has shown significant improvement with a low drop-out rate among children from all age groups. The survey shown high digital access and literacy among students of 14 to 16 years of age, with over 90% households in the state owning a smartphone and over 85% students knowing how to use the smartphone," the zonal manager added. She said compared to last few surveys, the recent survey has also shown significant improvement in foundational numeracy and literacy levels in govt schools in Assam. "Children enrolled in govt schools in rural Assam have shown a far better improvement in basic reading and arithmetic skills when compared to private schools. This improvement can be attributed to the implementation of NEP as after that various initiatives have been taken and that translated into better results," she added.

Kota, Jun 6 (PTI) A relationship manager in an ICICI bank branch in Kota allegedly swindled around Rs 4.58 crore from customers' accounts only to lose the lot of it in the stock market, police on Friday said.
