New Delhi, Mar 30 (UNI) AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj on Monday said that residents in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura area played a key role in rescuing people trapped in a fire that broke out at a multi-storey building in Chand Bagh colony a day ago. Addressing a press conference, Bharadwaj said the fire broke out in a five-storey building, reportedly starting from the parking area and spreading upward, filling the upper floors with smoke in the wee hours of Sunday. Around 20 to 25 people were said to be trapped inside when the incident occurred late at night. He stated that neighbours gathered at the spot after noticing the fire around 2 am and attempted rescue efforts before the arrival of fire services. According to him, some residents held up a bedsheet to help those trapped jump to safety, while others arranged ladders between adjacent buildings to evacuate people. Bharadwaj said several individuals, including children, were rescued with minor injuries. He also mentioned that one woman sustained burn injuries while moving gas cylinders away from the fire to prevent a larger explosion. Referring to the incident, the AAP leader described it as an example of community cooperation during emergencies and urged the government to recognise those who assisted in the rescue. He also raised concerns about fire safety mechanisms, citing the March 18 fire incident in Palam, and said better training for fire personnel and awareness among citizens could help reduce casualties in such situations.
