Kolkata: Monojit Mishra, the main accused in the June 25 law student gang-rape case, before leaving the college after committing the crime had asked a few of his trusted aides to stay back on the campus and keep a watch on Kasba Police Station about a kilometre away through the night. He and co-accused Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed left around the same time as the survivor, who was picked up by her father.Senior officers investigating the case also revealed that Monojit had called up a college official the next morning -- this official has claimed the discussion was "confined to college-related matters". One of the other accused, Pramit, had contacted a lawyer the next day.Both had also called up several college seniors, some with strong political links, pleading for help but were denied assistance by everyone and told to fight their own battle and face the consequences of their actions. On June 26 evening, Monojit and Zaib had reached Fern Road adjoining Ballygunge railway station, also about a kilometre from their college, to meet someone. They were traced to the area around 6.25 pm and arrested from Talbagan an hour later.Monojit initially told cops that he was "confident" that the survivor would not report the crime and the video clip of the sexual assault on their phones would act as a deterrent. He had been roaming free despite police filing charge sheets in each of the 11 FIRs filed against him since 2013 and was confident he would get away this time as well.Cops have collected all possible evidence against the accused, including a bed cover from the guard room where the gang rape took place. "We have not found any serious tampering of evidence. The bed cover has a stain and forensics will analyse it," said an officer.
