New Delhi: Civic authorities in Gujarat's Rajkot demolished more than 1,300 houses on Tuesday in a large scale operation to remove illegal settlements along the Aji River. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation led the drive with tight security arrangements in place, PTI reported. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Jani told PTI that notices were issued to about 1,500 propertiesm which includes nearly 681 houses located directly on the riverbank. By 2 pm on Tuesday, around 1,350 houses had been cleared, civic chief Tushar Sumera said. Huge security deployment Over 2,500 police officers were stationed at the site to prevent any law and order issues. Surveillance teams, drone units, Special Operations Group personnel, Quick Response Teams and the State Reserve Police Force were present as the drive was being taken place. Officials divided the 2.5 km stretch of Jangleshwar along the river into seven zones to manage the operation smoothly. Class 1 officers and technical teams supervised the demolition work. Heavy machinery in action The civic body used over 260 machines for the operation. These included JCBs, tractors, breakers and dumpers. More than 65 earth excavating machines and large hydraulic excavators were deployed to demolish multi storey buildings and large bungalows, according to PTI. Authorities said the presence of bigger structures slowed down the process. Rehabilitation plan in place Jani said the corporation remains firm on removing illegal encroachments. He further added displaced families will receive accommodation under a housing scheme. He also said the administration plan to build a new road in the cleared area in a week. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Jani said the demolition so far has been peaceful. He further added that locals cooperated during the drive. The operation was the largest demolition drive. It was undertaken by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. Officials said thato ver 1,400 of the total illegal structures were located in the Jangleshwar stretch along the Aji River.
