Gandhinagar: The state govt said on Wednesday that the Khijadiya bird sanctuary strengthened its unique identity in Gujarat's eco-tourism sector by attracting over 52,400 visitors in 2024-25. The govt added that the sanctuary, located near Jamnagar, will be showcased at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) for Saurashtra-Kutch next month as a model of sustainable development.The govt said in a statement that Kutch and Saurashtra are evolving into leading tourist destinations in the state, offering a blend of natural landscapes, wildlife, coastal beauty, spiritual sites and rich cultural heritage. From the White Rann to the pilgrimage sites of Saurashtra, the coastal areas, and sanctuaries, the travel experience offers visitors diverse and memorable experiences, the statement added.Spanning over 600 hectares, the Khijadiya bird sanctuary is known for its confluence of fresh and saline water. This unique ecological setup provides diverse habitats for birds. According to the Gujarat govt's forest and environment department, 317 bird species were recorded here in 2023-24, increasing to 332 in 2024-25, indicating the sanctuary's evolving biodiversity.In 2022, Khijadiya was designated a Ramsar site of international importance. The state govt is developing facilities for visitors, including watchtowers, forest cottages, bird observation platforms, interpretation centres and informative signboards.The sanctuary's main strength lies in its habitat diversity. Here, fresh water combines with coastal tides to create pools and ditches. This natural set-up creates favourable microhabitats for wildlife, making Khijadiya one of India's most vibrant bird sites, the govt said."The region's rich biodiversity complements the state's key initiatives such as agriculture, tourism, climate resilience, and sustainable infrastructure development, which will be a focal point during VGRC," the statement added.
Rameswaram, Feb 10 (PTI) The new 2.05 kilometre Pamban Bridge will allow trains to cross the sea between mainland India and Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu in less than 5 minutes, significantly less than the previous 25-30 minutes on the old structure, railway officials said on Monday. New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) Wheat sowing increased by 1.38 per cent year-on-year to 320 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing 2024-25 rabi season, according to the agriculture ministry data released on Tuesday.
