Ahmedabad: Bomb threat emails to several schools in the city on Wednesday made parents dash to schools to ensure that their children were safe. The rush caused traffic snarls around schools.While the schools that received bomb threats evacuated their classrooms quickly and summoned parents to pick up their children, many other schools that had not received any threat also asked parents to take their children home. Most Ahmedabad schools remained shut in the afternoon shift on Wednesday as fallout of the bomb threats. As news trickled in that the Vejalpur-based Zydus School of Excellence received a bomb threat, other schools sprang into action, checking their emails to ascertain whether they had also received the bomb threat. Soon afterwards, schools that received the threat email began informing police and started taking steps to evacuate their premises. Thirty-one schools in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar received threat emails, leading to chaotic traffic around these schools. This led to delays in parents reaching schools. "I had just reached my office when I received a message in the WhatsApp group informing me of the bomb threat," said Rakesh Patel, a parent of a student of St Xavier's Loyola School. Patel said, "I headed to the school around 11.30am and faced a major problem in reaching it because of traffic jams." Rekha Savaliya, a resident of South Bopal, said her son studies at Anand Niketan School. "When the news first came, I was out for some work and the school's name was not on the list of schools that had received threat emails." Savaliya said, "But soon I got a call from the school to take my child home." Mrugen Shah, the principal of Prakash School, said examinations were on in the school when it received the bomb threat. "We immediately evacuated the school and shifted all students to the playground and told parents to collect their children." Manan Choksi, the trustee of Udgam School for Children, said that bomb threats were received by Udgam School and Zebar School. "I came to know of the bomb threat email around 10am. We immediately informed police and parents."
