Panaji: India faces an increasingly volatile maritime security landscape marked by geopolitical shifts and emerging threats ranging from grey-zone warfare to seaborne supply chain vulnerabilities, said chief of naval staff, admiral Dinesh Tripathi on Wednesday.The country's top naval officer warned that the waters around India have become "more complex and contested than ever before," driven by changing power dynamics, rapid technological advancement, and a widening array of security challenges at sea. Speaking at the INS Hansa during the commissioning of INAS 335, the second squadron of the anti-submarine MH-60R helicopters, Tripathi said that the navy is bolstering its aviation wing to meet the "challenging and dynamic" needs of the country. "Strengthening maritime security and deterrence are fundamental to safeguarding our sea lines of communications, and growing national maritime interests," Tripathi said. Five MH-60R multi-role aircraft will be based at INS Hansa from where these helicopters can be deployed onto frigates and destroyers while also undertaking missions from land. The commissioning of this squadron follows the first MH-60R naval air squadron in Kochi, Kerala, in March 2024.The MH-60R is an all-weather, day-and-night capable helicopter designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and vertical replenishment (VERTREP). "The MH-60R, with its world-class sensors, advanced avionics and potent weapon suite will enhance and enable rapid response in warfare, maritime strikes, and search and rescue operations," said admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, chief of the naval staff.INAS 335, known as the 'Ospreys', join the P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft to hunt submarines and enemy warships.
