New Delhi: As Delhi's air quality worsens, the Delhi government has introduced emergency traffic curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). From Thursday, only BS6-compliant vehicles registered outside Delhi will be allowed to enter the city when GRAP Stage III or IV is in force, a move that could keep nearly 12 lakh vehicles off Delhi's roads during peak pollution days. During winter, Delhi's weather traps pollutants close to the ground, causing air quality to drop. Vehicle emissions contribute to about 40% of pollution in heavy traffic areas. To reduce pollution and health risks, Delhi is restricting the entry of older, more polluting vehicles during times of severe air quality. Under Grap Stage 3 and 4, only BS6-compliant vehicles from outside Delhi can enter the city. BS6 is a stricter emission standard, and these vehicles are cleaner than older models. Allowed: BS6 vehicles registered outside Delhi and any BS6 vehicles within Delhi that have a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. Barred: Non-BS6 vehicles registered outside Delhi and older vehicles with higher emissions. Yes. The PUC certificate is required across all GRAP stages. If your vehicle doesn't have a valid certificate, you could be denied fuel at petrol stations in Delhi, regardless of pollution levels. Delhi uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at key locations, including petrol stations and entry points. These cameras will automatically check for vehicles without a valid PUC certificate. Around 2 lakh vehicles registered outside Delhi could be impacted by these restrictions during severe pollution days. These curbs will remain in place for as long as the GRAP Stage 3 and 4 is active. Authorities will review air quality daily and adjust the rules based on pollution levels.
