Bengaluru: Hundreds of taxi drivers staged a protest near Sadahalli toll plaza on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway Tuesday morning, demanding rollback of the parking and pick-up rules for pre-booked private cabs at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).They alleged that the "skewed" policy -- which seems to unduly favour app-based aggregators -- is negatively impacting the livelihood of 30,000 independent and traditional taxi drivers, who have been servicing the airport for decades, including the years at HAL airport. They claimed they are forced to shell out "a penalty of Rs 100" while exiting KIA almost always.The flash demonstration briefly turned tense when a section of protesters attempted to disrupt traffic on the national highway and damaged a few taxis, prompting police to resort to a mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd. Police said though the protesters had not sought permission for the demonstration, they were allowed to stage a sit-in. Around 150 protesters were taken into preventive custody and released later.The protesters alleged the overall cab fare would shoot up if the new rules were not withdrawn, and airport users would end up paying a steep price.Ramesh H, honorary president of Bruhat Bengaluru Taxi Drivers' Union, said the rules were "framed to benefit" aggregators at the expense of conventional taxi operators. "Without proper application of mind, BIAL has shifted us to the P4 pick-up zone, 1km from the arrival point. Passengers -- especially those travelling with luggage, children, and elderly family members -- are finding it difficult to access the pick-up point," he said.Ramesh added that passengers have begun voicing objections and that drivers using P4 are being penalised as it is nearly impossible to complete boarding within the stipulated time. "We've been operating airport services for 10 years. Earlier, one airport trip would cover fuel and toll cost. Now, after paying toll, waiting charges and penalties at P3 and P4, we are going back with losses," said Ramesh Gowda, a cab driver from Yelahanka. "This rule is hitting us." Driver Mohammed Ismail expressed the fear traditional operators are being pushed out of the airport ecosystem.
