Kolkata: Over 58 lakh names of pre-existing voters have been deleted from the draft electoral roll published for West Bengal on Tuesday. This is part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process by the Election Commission of India (ECI) before the 2026 Assembly elections in the state. The names have been deleted due to death, relocation, duplication, missing, and other reasons. West Bengal CEO said that the exact number of voters deleted is 5,820,898, as per Hindustan Times. "Aggrieved persons can submit their claims in Form 6 along with the declaration form and supporting documents after publication of Draft Roll 2026 during the period fixed for receiving claims and objections," the Election Commission has said on the portal -- this period being until January 15, 2026, after which the final rolls will be published," it has been said. While over 24 lakh voters have been marked as 'dead' in the draft list, over 12 lakh voters have been marked as missing since they could not be traced to their registered addresses. Nearly 20 lakh voters were found to have relocated permanently from their constituencies and another 1.38 lakh voters were deleted due to duplicate name entries. Over 57,000 names were deleted from the list due to reasons other than the ones already mentioned. The enumeration phase of the SIR in West Bengal ended last week. The West Bengal government moved the Supreme Court against the process. While the matter is pending, the Court did not order any stay. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy termed the deletion of 58 lakh names "injustice". "This is the BJP's conspiracy to remove legitimate voters from Bengal's list. We have set up voter assistance booths and we will help them submit forms to include their names in the voter list," he told NDTV in Parliament.
