MUMBAI: India is witnessing a sharp increase in companies purchasing cyber insurance and expanding cover sizes, as boards and management reassess digital risks following high-profile global outages, like the one involving Jaguar Land Rover, and tighter data protection rules. The time taken to put a cyber insurance cover in place has shrunk dramatically to just a few days from six to seven months earlier, as companies move quickly to hedge against operational disruption, regulatory fines and potential indemnification exposure, said insurers and brokers. At least one large Indian company has increased its cyber insurance cover nearly sixfold, despite having no prior cyber incidents or claims history. The decision followed a reassessment by its board of the financial impact of a prolonged system downtime rather than any specific breach. "Insurers and clients are buying insurance policies within a couple of days which earlier took six-seven months and also policy limits are rising rapidly, with at least one large Indian company increasing its cover nearly sixfold in recent months, despite having no prior cyber incidents," said Neha Anand, head of cyber at Prudent Insurance Broker. The risk of artificial intelligence-powered attacks and data privacy violations has led to a pickup in policy sales, according to industry executives, with risks such as deepfake-enabled fraud, automated ransomware and data misuse leading to specialised coverage. The reassessment has been driven by managements benchmarking insurance limits to the potential revenue loss from two to three months of system downtime. Global disruptions, including high-profile technology outages and cyber incidents affecting multinational firms, have led to the rethink at companies level. At the same time, the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act has added a regulatory dimension to cyber risk as companies are increasingly viewing cyber insurance as a potential financial backstop if penalties are imposed and indemnification is permitted, following similar acts under overseas data protection regimes such as Europe's General Data Protection Regulation. Coverage is also evolving beyond traditional malicious attacks. A rise in supply-chain breaches, where vulnerabilities in third-party software disrupt otherwise secure firms, has prompted broader policy terms. Non-malicious technology failures, like the global system outages in 2024, are also pushing insurers to expand protection to cover technical disruptions. Besides, Anand said, companies are now revisiting cyber insurance mid-term, instead of waiting for annual renewals.
