Fire guts Etawah irrigation office, decades-old records destroyed | Kanpur News - The Times of India

Kanpur: A massive fire gutted the Irrigation Department's Lower Ganga Canal Block, Etawah Division office on Sunday, reducing the entire building and nearly five decades of departmental records to ashes before fire brigade teams could bring the blaze under control.While officials cited a possible short circuit as the cause, a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact reason.The office was closed on Sunday and the fire came to light early Monday morning when residents noticed smoke and flames rising from the premises. The fire department was alerted around 6.30 am, following which three fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours, using continuous water pumping to douse the flames.By the time the fire was controlled, thousands of important files, including service records and personal documents of officers and employees accumulated over nearly 50 years, had been completely destroyed."I had come for my morning walk around 5.30 am when I received information about the fire. I immediately informed the officials," said the department's watchman.Kamlesh Kumar, an employee of the irrigation department, said that old and crucial records related to staff had been entirely destroyed. A fire brigade official said that teams acted promptly after receiving the alert and managed to control the fire after sustained efforts.
