Lucknow: Despite Supreme Court directions to speed up sterilization and rehabilitation of stray dogs, the campaign in the state capital has failed to pick up pace.Officials cite limited infrastructure and manpower as key obstacles, even as dog bite cases and public complaints continue to rise.According to civic data compiled after the Supreme Court's orders on stray dog management, a total of 2,794 dogs were sterilized in the past three months - 813 in Aug, 1,185 in Sep, and 796 till Oct 27.The average daily sterilization of stray dogs remains 40-60 per day, which was the same prior to SC orders.Animal welfare groups say these numbers fall short of what's required to control the city's growing stray population. The Humane World for Animals India estimated Lucknow's stray dog population at 75,000 in 2019, when the sterilization efforts first began."A survey was carried out recently after new wards and zones were added to the municipal limits. The final analysis is underway, and updated figures will be released soon," a representative from the organization said.Senior manager, Companion Animals and Engagement Team at Humane World for Animals India, Dr Sanjay Ahir said, "Through our collaboration with the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, we are working to manage the street dog population through sterilization, vaccination, and community engagement.""With India's first-ever Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre established in Lucknow, we are now focusing on training veterinarians and animal organizations to conduct high-quality, humane sterilization programmes. This is part of a larger effort to make dog population management in India compassionate, strategic, and effective," he said.Animal welfare officer, LMC, Dr Abhinav Verma said, "We are sterilizing around 40-60 stray dogs every day. Once the new ABC Centre becomes operational, our capacity will double. The tender for running the centre has already been floated, and once functional, it will significantly improve our ability to manage stray dogs in the city."Officials maintain that expansion plans are in motion, but the pace remains uneven across different zones, leaving large pockets of the city still struggling to control the rising number of stray dogs.
