Telangana SHRC takes cognizance of food poisoning incident in Nalgonda hostel

Hyderabad, July 15 (UNI) The Telangana State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of disturbing media reports about a food poisoning incident at the Scheduled Tribe Welfare Girls' Hostel in Mudigonda, Devarakonda Mandal of Nalgonda District, where over 30 girl students reportedly fell ill after consuming contaminated food. In response, the commission has directed the chief secretary to the government of Telangana to submit a comprehensive report by August 28. The report is expected to detail the current health condition of the affected students, findings from any inquiries conducted, actions taken against staff found responsible, and preventive measures being implemented to ensure food safety in all government-run hostels across the state. The commission's swift action comes amid growing concerns about the quality of food and overall hygiene in welfare hostels, especially those catering to underprivileged students. The incident has sparked outrage among parents and rights activists, demanding accountability and systemic improvements. Over 35 students of the Mudigonda Tribal Ashram Girls School in Devarakonda Mandal, Nalgonda district, fell ill on Monday, allegedly due to food poisoning. The residential school, which houses around 310 girls from Classes 3 to 10, had served spiced Bengal gram snacks and chicken curry for dinner on Sunday, followed by tamarind rice for breakfast the next day. Soon after breakfast, around 35 students complained of stomach pain and diarrhoea. Twenty students were taken to the Thoorpupalli Primary Health Centre, while another 20 were shifted to Devarakonda Area Hospital for treatment.
