Chennai: TVK president Vijay met family members of the Karur stampede victims at a resort in Mahabalipuram and apologized to them on Monday. He has promised to visit their homes in Karur.The family members said that Vijay 'profusely' apologised to them for the tragedy as well as for making them travel to meet him. Members from 37 families of the 41 deceased in the stampede were brought in buses from Karur and neighbouring districts to the resort to meet Vijay. The tragedy occured on Sept 27 during a rally held by Vijay at Velusamypuram in Karur. Vijay told them that he could not visit Karur as police were not supportive and private halls were not made available. V Devendran, husband of Suganya, who died in the stampede said Vijay felt sorry for his inability to travel to their houses. "He said the situation there did not permit him to visit. But he promised medical insurance will be extended to the entire family," Devendran said. Another parent who lost a child said Vijay broke down when he spoke about the child. "He said he would stand by us like a brother," the child's father said. Another relative said Vijay told them to reach out to him for any help they needed in the future.The meeting began around 10am at the resort's convention hall, where the families were asked to assemble. They were requested to write down their demands and needs, such as employment, financial assistance for marriages, and support for self-employment. These were handed over to TVK functionaries.They were then taken to an adjoining room, where Vijay met each family individually for about 15 to 20 minutes. Mobile phones were not allowed during the meetings, and participants were requested not to share any photographs from the venue. TVK functionaries were also not present in the room, said a family member of a victim. "Vijay promised the party would offer support for children's education, job placements and small-scale self-employment of the families," said a TVK functionary. The meetings ended around 6.30pm and the families were sent back to their natives in buses. Responding to criticism over Vijay bringing families to Mahabalipuram, TVK joint general secretary C T R Nirmal Kumar said several options were explored before finalizing the move. "We considered all possibilities and held several rounds of discussions with police, but no support was extended. Since the affected families are from other districts, we chose Mahabalipuram and ensured there was minimum inconvenience," he said.
