Ahmedabad: By Monday morning, Gujarat had recorded around 43 mm of rainfall in Oct, more than double the monthly average of 19 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). With this, the state's annual rainfall has reached 127% of its long-term average this year. Gujarat is among six Indian states that have received over twice the normal rainfall in Oct, as per IMD data.Data from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) indicates that from 2015 to 2024, Gujarat's average Oct rainfall stood at 27.4 mm, making this year's figure significantly higher. In the past decade, 2016 saw the highest Oct rain at 74.1 mm, followed by 60.6 mm in 2019 and 50.4 mm in 2024. With four days remaining in the month, experts believe the figure could rise further.For Gujarat and India's western coast, the current depression in the Arabian Sea marks the second major weather system this month, following the deep depression that intensified into cyclone Shakthi earlier. However, IMD officials said the chances of the present system developing into a cyclone were low. It is likely to continue moving north-northeastwards across the east-central Arabian Sea over the next 48 hours," the IMD bulletin stated.Of Gujarat's 252 talukas, 204 received 1 mm or more rainfall on Monday, with 16 recording over 50 mm till 6 pm, causing widespread crop damage in several areas.In Ahmedabad city, the maximum temperature dropped sharply from 35.5°C on Sunday to 25.5°C on Monday -- a 9.7°C fall -- while the minimum temperature stood at 23.3°C, slightly above normal.
