Kolkata: A mob of around 50, led by an auto driver, stormed a Sonarpur condominium, forced their way into the fourth-floor flat of customs inspector Pradeep Kumar and repeatedly assaulted him and his wife in front of their terrified four-year-old daughter on the night of Oct 23.Minutes before the assault, Kumar was involved in a brawl with the auto driver, Azizul Gazi, after his SUV grazed the three-wheeler while trying to negotiate a Kali Puja immersion procession, police said.Frantic calls from Kumar and other residents of Deeshari Megacity to Sonarpur police station met with a stock response -- the cops were busy managing Kali Puja immersion. By the time police came, around 40 minutes later, the rowdies had left.Gazi and three others were arrested. Charged with bailable offences, all have been granted bail, triggering fears of more attacks.The gang arrived at the gate of the condo on Dwarir Road, off Southern Bypass, around 9.50 pm. The mob easily overpowered the two guards at the gate and ran the 350-odd metres from the entrance to Tower 11, where the Kumars live, before splitting into two groups.While one group took the elevator, the others rushed up the staircase to Kumar's apartment. The hooligans pulled apart the collapsible gate of flat 4B and barged in after breaking open the wooden door.They repeatedly hit Kumar on his face and head and shoved his wife when she tried to shield him. Kumar said he tried calling Sonarpur police station twice when the attackers were at his doorstep but was told the cops were on "Kali Puja immersion duty". Other residents said they, too, got the same response when they called up the police station, around 6 km from the complex.Kumar, who moved into the condo a year ago, later said, "As the assault continued, we thought our end was near. I suffered injuries on the forehead, neck and chin." He was taken to Kalyani AIIMS by colleagues and Bengal BJP netas.Police said Kumar was driving home when he got caught up in an immersion procession near his home. While trying to skirt the procession, his SUV brushed an auto.A senior police officer said Kumar got involved in an altercation with the auto driver. Gazi, the driver, alleged that Kumar assaulted him and also tried to extort money from him. "The customs officer and the auto driver both lodged complaints against each other," the officer said.Eyewitness said Gazi and others chased Kumar till the housing complex gate and kept hitting his car. They blocked the gate but Kumar managed to drive in. He had no inkling of the horrible turn of events that was to follow.Gora Bose, vice-president of the residents' association of Deeshari Megacity, said, "Around 200 people had gathered at the gate. Our two guards could do nothing. Around 50 people scaled the gates and rushed towards Kumar's flat. We were all at the spot. They pushed us while making their way in."Gazi was arrested on Friday and charged with robbery, causing grievous hurt, mischief, trespass and wrongful restraint, all bailable offences. He was out on bail the next day. Three others, including auto driver Azad Ali Mondal, were arrested on Sunday and charged with the same offences. They got bail within a few hours.Kumar and other residents of the complex said they were fearing more attacks by the goons.
