Bengaluru: The proposed tunnel road project in the city -- primarily conceived by the govt as an infrastructure solution to traffic woes -- has now turned into a full-blown political slugfest between deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar and Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya. Responding to the MP's repeated objection to the project over the past few weeks, Shivakumar on Saturday said the govt cannot halt the project merely because of opposition from Surya or the BJP. Participating in the fifth edition of the 'Walk with Bengaluru' citizen outreach programme, organised by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) at Gandhi Park in Nagarabhavi, within Bengaluru West city corporation limits, the DCM said the state govt's plan is to ease traffic congestion on city roads. Allaying citizens' fears and ending speculation about possible damage to Lalbagh during the tunnel road work, Shivakumar clarified, "We will not cause any damage to Lalbagh as the tunnel will be built underneath the garden. We will only use one acre of the park to carry out the work, and post completion of work, the area will be restored as it is today and handed over to the horticulture department." When asked about Surya's opposition in the backdrop of the historic and geological importance of the park, the DCM shot back, "The tunnel road must be built under Bengaluru -- not outside the city! There will be no damage to any structure. If tunnels can be built in historic cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi without any issues, why not here? I will not yield to his opposition at any point. Let anyone oppose the project, I won't bother. Eventually, it is the work that will speak for itself."He also revealed that he is open to discussing alternative ideas on the project.All empty talk, says DCMSaying that Surya and others have filed a case in court to prevent the project, Shivakumar said, "Their intention is to prevent the govt from gaining a good name through this work. We have been taking up several good projects for the welfare of citizens. They (BJP) could not even think of doing one such work. They are known for empty talk, and Tejasvi Surya is the same." Unfazed by the criticism that the tunnel road will serve the city's elites and only car users, he said: "I agree that it is only for car users and those who would like to pay toll and travel. If it concerns him (Surya), let him give his plan of action for Bengaluru. Despite being a parliamentarian, he could not secure even Rs 10 in special grants from the Prime Minister for the city's development. They could not even solve the traffic issue, could not float a single tender for garbage collection, but now they are opposing our vision. They colluded with the mafia and ruined Bengaluru. Hence, people supported us and elected us to govern the state. We will continue with our work on safeguarding Bengaluru's reputation at the global level."Also hitting out strongly at BJP leaders who have been claiming they would scrap the GBA if elected to power, Shivakumar remarked: "If they are elected by the people to power, let them do anything they want. But it is not in their fate to get elected again and scrap the GBA. This new system of city governance will continue. Let us see if they have the courage to withdraw their candidates.
