New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi International Airport's revamped Terminal 2 (T2) was inaugurated on Saturday by Civil Aviation minister K Rammohan Naidu. T2, which became operational with the start of the winter schedule, was upgraded under Delhi International Airport Ltd's (DIAL) modernisation plan to make the airport more efficient and passenger-friendly.Calling the project a "symbol of a connected, competitive and caring India," Naidu said the redevelopment reflects the govt's focus on world-class aviation infrastructure to meet the growing demands of air travellers. The Delhi airport handles nearly half of northern India's passenger traffic, with around 50,000 transfers daily, he noted, making future-ready infrastructure essential.Naidu expressed pride in the transformation of Delhi's T2, saying, "I felt a lot of pride in walking around this terminal. When I travelled to the US back in the day, this terminal is where my earliest memories of going abroad were made. The 40-year-old legacy terminal has been reimagined to meet the aspirations of modern passengers. We set a firm deadline to complete the upgrade before the winter schedule, and today we have achieved it," Naidu said, adding that the move will strengthen Delhi's position as an aviation hub. He highlighted a 13% increase in connectivity from Delhi compared with the summer schedule, noting that airlines are expanding routes to improve national connectivity. DIAL, led by the GMR Group, said the refurbished T2 has been designed to deliver a faster, smarter and more comfortable passenger experience. It now features self-baggage drop counters, a virtual information desk offering live flight updates and six new passenger boarding bridges with advanced accessibility features. Interiors have been overhauled with skylights, modern ceilings, upgraded flooring and new wayfinding signage, along with improved facilities for persons with reduced mobility. Ventilation and fire safety systems have also been upgraded.Flight operations have been realigned across terminals to improve efficiency. IndiGo will operate flights numbered 6E 2000-2999 from the revamped T2, while continuing other domestic flights from T1 and international services from T3. Air India will shift around 60 domestic flights from T3 to T2, while Air India Express will handle all domestic operations from T1. SpiceJet and Akasa Air will continue operating from T1. Together, Air India and IndiGo will manage around 120 daily domestic flights from T2 once it becomes operational.DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar called the reopening a significant milestone in the airport's growth story.
