Jaipur: Officials from Jaipur Municipal Corporations, Heritage and Greater had promised before Diwali that no open garbage depots or littered streets would be seen after the festival. However, the very next morning, the city woke up to streets with overflowing bins, plastic waste, and scattered remains of fireworks, a sight that still hasn't changed.The sanitation work in the city has been slow for the past five days, as several municipal employees have remained on extended holidays. In several areas, garbage collection hoppers didn't show up for three days, while in the Walled City, the corporation's much-advertised two-time waste collection was reportedly reduced to none.The situation is particularly worrying inside the Walled City, Jaipur's UNESCO World Heritage Site, where narrow lanes prevent garbage hoppers from entering, forcing residents to dump their waste outside. With sanitation workers not showing up, garbage heaps have become increasingly visible. Locals fear the mess could tarnish the city's image at a time when tourist footfall is at its peak.The corporations announced before Diwali that resources were being increased and zones divided to ensure smooth cleanliness drives across the city. However, sanitation workers have remained confined to main roads, leaving inner lanes choked with firecracker debris and uncollected household waste.Even as the JMC-G recently claimed to have cleared 1,400 tonnes of waste in a single day, residents across the city say otherwise.Residents share their frustration.
