New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) brought forward the deadlines for the complete biomining of legacy waste at three landfills -- Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur -- and the reclamation of land from Dec 2028 to Dec 2026. The information was shared by the civic body after a high-level review meeting on solid waste management in Delhi. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of the CM Rekha Gupta, urban development minister Ashish Sood, mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, MCD commissioner Ashwani Kumar and other officials.Singh said the discussions focused on 13 key agenda points, mainly concerning the progress of biomining at the three major landfill sites. "With the launch of Phase II, the Corporation increased daily biomining from 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes as of July 2025, aiming to complete land reclamation at all three sites before 2026," the mayor added.The officials claimed that since Dec 2024 at Bhalswa, when a new agency took charge of Phase II biomining, MCD processed 15.3 lakh tonnes of waste till July 7. "It was given the task to process 45 lakh MT of legacy waste in 18 months; however, efforts are being made to achieve the target in 12-14 months now," said an official. Likewise, the corporation also reported processing 10.5 lakh MT of legacy waste at Okhla following the assignment of work to a new agency on Dec 18, 2024, and 4 lakh MT after the beginning of Phase II of processing at Ghazipur from April onwards. "In these two cases also, the target is to complete the work before the set time period for biomining of 30 lakh MT and 45 lakh MT of legacy waste, respectively," said an official.MCD also decided to hire one agency for each of the three landfills, which will simultaneously work on processing and biomining the remaining waste. "In the third phase, no fixed quantity will be set, and agencies will be responsible for processing all remaining waste. This is to ensure that the sites are reclaimed in a time-bound manner. We have prepared a tender in this regard, which will soon be forwarded to the commissioner and tabled in a house meeting. We are planning to float the tender for Phase III of biomining by the end of July," said the official.During the meeting, CM emphasised the need to utilise the reclaimed land for public welfare projects such as sports complexes, hospitals, and schools on one-third of the area, while ensuring the construction of future-ready waste processing facilities on the remaining reclaimed space.
