New Delhi: In a move to re-establish a unified command over Delhi's traffic management for the first time in nearly four years, Delhi Police commissioner Satish Golcha on Friday appointed Neeraj Thakur, a 1994-batch IPS officer, as the new chief of traffic police. Delhi's anti-terror unit also got a new chief, Anil Shukla, a 1996-batch officer.These postings were part of a wider reshuffle of senior IPS officers announced by the Delhi govt's Home Department. The new assignments, approved by lieutenant governor VK Saxena, has led to change of guard across vital divisions. With Thakur's appointment, the top cop appears to have scrapped the 2021 division of traffic unit into two zones, a move which proved to be ineffective, creating confusion and encouraging blame-shifting across ranks. For the longest time, Delhi had only one special commissioner handling traffic management. The split -- introduced to address Delhi's expanding traffic challenges -- was primarily seen as an arrangement to adjust more officers. According to the order, Shukla, who was previously posted in the National Investigation Agency, will now serve as the special commissioner of the special cell with the additional charge of the Tech and PI division. Shukla's batchmate, Manish Agarwal, has been posted Special CP (Intelligence) with extra charge of the Public Transport Safety division. Ajay Chaudhry, also from 1996-batch, has been designated as Special CP (Vigilance) with the additional charge of special police unit for women and children (SPUWAC). Among others, Atul Katiyar (IPS 1997) continues as Special CP (Welfare) but will also oversee the Licensing and Legal division, and K Jegadesan is the new Special CP (Protective Security division) and managing director of Delhi Police Housing Corporation (DPHCL). Robin Hibu (IPS 1993), previously in Public Transport Safety, has been appointed Special CP, Human Resource division, while Rajesh Khurana will now head the Provision and Finance division. Devesh Chandra Srivastava (IPS 1995) retains his role as Special CP (Crime) but takes on the additional responsibility of the Perception Management and Media Cell.
