Kolkata: Kolkata and several south Bengal districts could be lashed by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Oct 28 and 29 under the impact of a cyclonic storm, which is set to form over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal on the morning of Oct 27. The system, which is now brewing over the southeast Bay of Bengal, turned into a low-pressure area on Friday from an upper air circulation. It is slowly moving west-northwestwards and seemed headed towards the Andhra-Tamil Nadu coast, said a private weather forecasting service. Kolkata meteorologists, however, said it was too early to predict the direction, landfall time and area. The cyclone would be named Montha once it forms. "It is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a depression over the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by Oct 25 and further into a deep depression by Oct 26 and into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay by Oct 27,"states a bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Friday.The exact trajectory and direction of the cyclone were not clear yet, said HR Biswas, deputy director-general of meteorology. "Going by the wind direction and the movement of the system, it seems south Bengal will have the maximum impact on Oct 28 and 29. It may change depending on the movement of the system over the next two days," added Biswas.The impact of the cyclonic storm would begin on Sunday with light rain and thundershowers at one or two places over South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. Light rain and thunderstorms may continue in East and West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas on Monday.On Oct 28, heavy rain (70 mm-110 mm) is likely to occur at one or two places in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore.
