Chittoor: Indian Army jawan Pangala Kartheek, martyred in a gunfight with militants in north Kashmir, received the ceremonial gun salute before his father Varadarajulu performed the last rites amid patriotic slogans at the jawan's native village Eguva Ragimanupenta in Bangarupalem mandal of Chittoor district on Wednesday. Wrapped in the national flag, Kartheek's mortal remains were brought to his village in a decorated Army vehicle. A large crowd gathered to pay their final respects to the 28-year-old soldier, who had joined the Indian Army in 2017. The last rites were performed amid full state honours in the presence of Chittoor district collector Sumit Kumar. Area MLAs K. Murali Mohan and G. Jaganmohan were present. Kartheek lost his life fighting terrorists during a joint operation by the Army, paramilitary forces and J&K police in Zaloora Gujjarpatti area of Sopore in Kashmir on Sunday. Collector Sumit Kumar underlined that Kartheek had made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. "Government will provide all possible support to his family," he said, including a government job for one family member and allocation of five acres of land to support the family's livelihood. Kartheek's mother Selvi recounted her son's last phone call on Saturday, during which he spoke about returning home soon. "We were eagerly waiting for his visit, but fate had other plans," she said amid tears. Puthalapattu MLA K. Murali Mohan said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, currently on a foreign tour, has expressed his condolences. "The CM has assured that Kartheek's supreme sacrifice will not go in vain and announced full support for his family. The district collector has submitted proposals to the state government for financial assistance to the martyr's family," the MLA stated. Eguva Ragimanupenta village panchayat has passed a resolution to name the colony, where Kartheek's family resides, after the martyr. Plans are also underway to erect a statue in his memory at the school he studied in.
