Srinagar: The ruling National Conference (NC) on Friday won three out of four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure one. NC candidates Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan, Sajad Kichloo and Gurwinder Singh Oberoi alias Shammi Oberoi won, while the BJP's J&K president Satpal Sharma won the fourth seat against the NC's Imran Nabi Dar. The NC was confident of clinching victory on three seats considering the number of MLAs from the ruling alliance in the J&K assembly, while the fourth seat saw critical political manoeuvring by the BJP to ensure its success. The Congress and opposition PDP had promised their support to the NC candidates. As per official figures, Ramzan got 58 votes, Kitchloo 56 and Oberoi 31. The BJP's Sharma got 32 votes, while Dar got only 21 votes. On the first notification, Ramzan polled 58 votes and the BJP's Ali Muhammad Mir got 28 from the total 87 votes polled. Of these. one was rejected. On the second notification, Kitchloo secured 56 votes and the BJP's Rakesh Mahajan 29, while two votes were rejected. On the third notification, Oberoi secured 31, the BJP's Sharma 32 and NC's Dar 21, while three votes were rejected. J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah said that his party's votes remained intact across the four elections, as witnessed by the NC election agent who had seen each polling slip. "There was no cross-voting from any of our MLAs so questions arise-where did the four extra votes of the BJP come from? Who were the MLAs who deliberately invalidated their votes by marking a wrong preference number while voting?" Abdullah asked. The People's Conference legislator Sajad Lone, who abstained from voting, blamed the NC for cross-voting, terming the election a fixed match. "Axis of evil. NC and BJP. Thank God I abstained. Imagine what my plight would have been. Now mathematically proved. That it was a fixed match," said Lone. "Why did NC poll extra votes for candidate 3. They didn't need to. They polled 31 votes for candidate 3. Only 29 votes would have sufficed. Even 28. Because BJP was fighting for seat 4. Who cross voted? Whose votes were rejected? And who was hand in glove?" Rajya Sabha elections in J&K were held after a decade, and it was the first time that members of the upper house of Parliament were elected from the Union Territory of J&K.
