Kurnool, Oct 24 (UNI) In a ghastly road accident, 19 bus passengers and a motorcyclist were charred alive when a Bangalore-bound private bus caught fire after hitting a motorcycle in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours on Friday. According to DIG Koya Praveen, the ill-fated bus, belonging to Vemuri Kaveri Travels, burst into flames after colliding with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The bike got stuck under the bus, rupturing its fuel tank. The petrol spilling from the tank of the bike resulted in the bus erupting in a ball of fire. The inferno engulfed the bus and its sleeping passengers, near Chintikuru village on National Highway 44, in Kurnool district. The motorcycle rider was also killed in the accident. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha informed that 39 adults, four children and another unidentified person were travelling in the sleeper coach of the bus when the accident took place. As many as 25 passengers escaped with injuries, she said, adding that 12 were provided medical treatment. The bus passengers were asleep and flames engulfed the bus before they understood what was happening. However some passengers escaped by smashing the windows and windscreens. The bike rider Shiva Shankar (22) was also killed in the accident. All the 19 bodies were so badly burnt that they were beyond recognition. The inquest postmortem was conducted at the accident site itself by forensic experts in a tent erected for the purpose. The doctors in the Government hospital said that 11 passengers were admitted in the morning. However, six of them were discharged after treatment and five were undergoing treatment as they suffered fractures and head injuries. Four member family including Golla Ramesh (35), his wife G Anusha (30), their daughter Manwita (10) and son Maneesh (12) were burnt alive in the accident while two young women Software Engineers Gannamaneni Dhatri (27) Anusha (24) were also also killed in the mishap. Out of 42 seats, the Kaveri Travels bus was carrying around 40 passengers, two drivers and a cleaner when the accident occurred, according to a reservation details chart released by the transporter. Though the bus had a travel permit validity up to April 5, 2028, its fitness validity had expired on March 31, 2025. Its insurance validity and tax liability expired on April 20, 2024 and March 31,2024 respectively. Home Minister Anitha announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to each of the bereaved families and Rs 2 lakh to each of the injured persons who belong to Andhra Pradesh State. The Home Minister announced the formation of 16 teams to investigate the ghastly bus accident from all angles. Ten teams would work on conducting DNA tests to identify the bodies. All the bodies were shifted to the GGH in Kurnool. Home Minister Anitha, DGP Harish Kumar Gupta, Transport Minister Prasadreddy, Collector A Siri and DIG Koya Praveen visited the scene of the accident and monitored the operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, AP Governor S Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock and grief over the death of bus passengers. The Prime Minister announced that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
