Chandigarh: The FIR in the alleged suicide of Rohtak ASI Sandeep Kumar mentions grave charges levelled by his wife, Santosh, on IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, her brother Amit Rattan, a Punjab AAP MLA, and two others, saying "unbearable pressure" from them drove the police officer to shoot himself."This tragic incident reflects the ongoing struggle between corruption and honesty within the police system," says Santosh in the complaint that forms the basis of the FIR.Amneet is the wife of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide on Oct 7, less than 24 hours after an FIR of extortion was registered at Rohtak Urban Estate police station against his former gunman, Sushil Kumar. Sandeep was a member of the team investigating this case in which the ex-PSO had allegedly claimed that he demanded bribes on behalf of Puran Kumar.TOI has a copy of the FIR that is yet to be uploaded on the Haryana Police portal though it was registered over a week ago. It lists one 'Sunil SIS IG office' as accused No. 1, followed by gunman Sushil Kumar, Amneet, Amit and a fifth person mentioned as 'Unknown 1'.Santosh's complaint says ASI Sandeep was under "severe mental distress" for nearly a week before the suicide. She has demanded a CBI investigation to "ensure a fair and transparent probe and bring the complete truth to light".TOI tried to speak with Amneet and Amit for their version but was yet to hear back from him at the time of filing this report. Sources close to Amneet said the family was preoccupied with preparations for the final prayers of the late IPS officer, scheduled for Sunday in Panchkula. The family may address this issue after that, and could move court to have the FIR quashed, they said.According to Santosh's complaint, "unbearable pressure" was exerted by the family of deceased IPS officer Y Puran Kumar -- Amneet, Amit, and a relative posted in the Scheduled Castes Commission.Santosh submitted her complaint to the Rohtak Sadar SHO on Oct 15, following which an FIR was registered naming Amneet, Amit, and police personnel Sunil Kumar and Sushil Kumar.The FIR says, "Sometime ago, an FIR in a corruption case was registered at Rohtak Urban Estate police station. My husband was part of the investigation team in that case. Before and after registration of the FIR, several individuals -- including Sushil Kumar, Sunil Kumar (posted in the security branch of Rohtak police), and others -- repeatedly approached and threatened my husband. They referred to senior officers and influential persons, namely IGP Y Puran Kumar, his wife IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, her brother Amit Rattan (MLA, previously arrested in a corruption case), and another relative of theirs holding the post of IG in the Commission for Scheduled Castes.""During investigation... Sushil Kumar was arrested. Further arrests were to follow, and this is why IGP Y Puran Kumar committed suicide. After his death, his wife Amneet and her brother Amit resisted the postmortem of Puran Kumar and began pressuring Haryana govt to act against honest and sincere police officers involved in the case," says the FIR, quoting Santosh.It was because of this "political and administrative pressure" that her husband was continuously harassed and mentally tortured, she says in the complaint. For a week leading up to the alleged suicide, ASI Sandeep had been expressing "deep distress", repeatedly telling his wife that in the police department, honesty has no value and that honest officers were being punished for performing their duty with integrity, says her complaint, adding that despite her constant efforts to console him, he had "lost faith in the system"."My husband ultimately took the extreme step of ending his life due to unbearable pressure and harassment caused by Amneet, her brother Amit, and their relatives holding high-ranking positions. This tragic incident reflects the ongoing struggle between corruption and honesty within the police system. I have seen the suicide note left by my husband near his body, which substantiates the mental agony and coercion he suffered at the hands of these individuals. I request that a thorough and impartial investigation be conducted into the roles of the above-mentioned persons, including a probe into their and our properties, to establish who is corrupt and who is honest," says the FIR.She had also referred to a vigilance probe that would have allegedly brought "more shocking revelations about corrupt IAS and IPS officers in the state".Her complaint ends with the words: "Given the gravity of the matter and the involvement of influential figures, I demand that the case be handed over to CBI for an independent and transparent inquiry. I am in deep mental trauma due to my husband's death.
