Chennai: Three people were killed and three injured as rain battered several districts across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday night. While there was respite from the showers on Wednesday for much of TN, water bodies were overflowing, rivers were flooded, and low lying areas and paddy fields were inundated. The three women were identified as Yasodha, 69, and her daughter Jaya, 40, from Andarmullipallam village in Cuddalore, while the third victim was Vanamayili, 60, from Kongarapalayam village in Kallakurichi. All three died when portions of their houses caved in. Three men were injured in a wall collapse in another incident at a village near Cuddalore, while six heads of cattle were killed and 24 houses were partly damaged in the rain, officials said. Theerthamalai in Dharmapuri has recorded the highest rainfall in TN, receiving 176mm of rainfall in 24 hours ended Wednesday morning. Cauvery at Hogenakkal recorded a water inflow of 32,000 cusecs. Consequently, bathing and coracle riding have been banned until further notice, and schools and anganwadis would remain closed on Thursday. Landslides have been reported in the forest area near Bargur tribal village in Anthiyur, as well as at Hasanur and Dhimbam ghat sections in Thalavadi, and at Kadambur and Kuthiyalathur in Sathyamangalam. In Cauvery delta districts, samba and thaladi paddy crops, in various stages of maturity, and harvest-ready Kuruvai crops, were submerged in vast swathes of fields. Although the rain subsided on Wednesday, standing crop remained inundated. More than a hundred huts and pucca houses across the delta districts were partially damaged, said officials. Water discharge from Mettur dam increased from 30,500 cusecs on Tuesday to 35,500 cusecs on Wednesday. "We can expect copious flow of Cauvery and Kollidam rivers for the next few days," a WRD official said. Residents along banks of the rivers have been given a flood alert. As outflow from Mettur dam was on the rise, discharge of surplus water into Kollidam river was stepped up from Mukkombu barrage in Trichy. The rain has increased inflow into Bhavanisagar and Sholayar dams. Siruvani reservoir and Pillur dam levels in Coimbatore stood at 38ft and 87ft, respectively. Down south, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram received rain till Wednesday morning. The road along Vaigai riverbank, and a few other places, were flooded. Thiruppuvanam in Sivaganga received 93mm rainfall in 24 hours while Karaikudi received 80mm. Schools and colleges in the district were closed due to the rain on Wednesday. Officials said 25 thatched-roof houses in Karaikudi, Sivaganga, Singampunari, Manamadurai, and Kalayarkoil, were damaged. While there was respite from rain in neighbouring Ramanathapuram too, several areas continued to be submerged. Fishermen in Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari stayed off the seas. Tourist areas were out of bounds on the ghat road to Yercaud and Nilgiris.
