Rohtak: Rohtak police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged suicide of ASI Sandeep Lather, whose death sent ripples through Haryana's police and administrative circles, coming in the wake of the suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.The four-member SIT is headed by DSP Dalip Singh and includes Sadar SHO Surender Kumar, plus a sub-inspector and an ASI. The team is expected to interview several key figures named in the case, including Puran Kumar's wife, IAS officer Amneet Kamar, and her brother Amit Rattan, a Punjab AAP MLA.ASI Lather, who was posted in the Rohtak cyber cell, allegedly shot himself with his service pistol in Ladhaut village on Oct 14 after releasing a video in which he said Puran Kumar's suicide wasn't a caste issue but because of corruption. In the video and a four-page note he left behind, he levelled serious allegations against the late IPS officer.Based on the statement of Lather's wife Santosh and the contents of the suicide note, police registered an FIR naming several people, including Amneet and Amit. The FIR, however, has not been made public. Sources told TOI that Lather's family was shown a copy of the FIR before they agreed to the post-mortem and cremation.Investigations say Lather was part of the police team that arrested head constable Sushil Kumar (Puran Kumar's PSO when he was IG-Rohtak) on charges of extortion.The chain of events began on Oct 6, when an FIR (No. 319) was registered at Rohtak's Urban Estate police station against Sushil Kumar. The next day, Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself at his Chandigarh home. On Oct 11, Chandigarh SIT probing Puran Kumar's suicide arrived in Rohtak to interview officers connected with the case, including ASI Lather. Three days later, Lather allegedly shot himself, leaving behind a note accusing Puran Kumar of corruption and harassment.Following protests by the ASI's family, police registered an FIR on Oct 15 at Sadar police station.
