Panchkula: A case of murder has been registered against former Punjab DGP Muhammad Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana, a former minister, their daughter-in-law and daughter following the death of their son Aqil around five days ago.Aqil had alleged in a purported social media video that his father and his wife were in a relationship, and that he faced a threat to his life. Adding a twist to the mystery, another video surfaced on Tuesday in which he purportedly says that he made the allegations due to "mental illness".An SIT has been constituted under the supervision of an ACP-rank officer to conduct a "deep and scientific probe" into all aspects surrounding the case, DCP Srishti Gupta said on Tuesday.Mustafa dismissed the allegations and told TOI, "I welcome registration of the FIR and setting up of an SIT. That is the first step police ought to follow. I have nothing to hide. Based on a postmortem conducted by police, it was said that death was due to drug overdose. I also suspect the same. He was into it (drugs) for a long time and used to say many things. No doubt, he spoke those things in the video under the influence of drugs."Aqil was found dead in his room at his Panchkula home on Oct 16. The family didn't suspect any foul play and believed it was a drug-overdose death.After an autopsy, police handed the body to the family for last rites. "No external injuries were found in the post-mortem, and the viscera was sent for further examination," said DCP Srishti Gupta.The case took a turn when certain social media posts and videos surfaced, purportedly made by the deceased prior to his death, making shocking allegations against his family members and claiming he feared for his life.On Oct 17, a resident of Punjab's Malerkotla named Shamshuddin Chaudhary, who claimed to be known to the family, filed a complaint alleging foul play in Aqil's death. He also held a press conference to share the alleged social media video of the victim.A case was registered on Monday under BNS sections 103(1) (murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) at MDC police station in Panchkula.According to the FIR, the complainant alleged there was simmering discontent between Aqil and his family. On Aug 27, Aqil publicly posted a video on social media in which he alleged that his entire family, including his mother and sister, were conspiring to kill him or implicate him in a false case."He clearly expressed apprehension that his life was in danger and that he may be killed by them. Now, the news of his sudden death has confirmed his apprehensions. It is clearly a case of foul play. In view of his prior video statement and the serious allegations made therein, the cause of death requires a thorough, fair, and impartial investigation," alleged the complainant."The complainant attached social media videos and posts, which are purportedly of the deceased. Then suspicion arose, and the case was registered," said the DCP.Asked about the allegations, Mustafa told TOI, "As far as Shamshuddin is concerned, he is a paid worker and will do it for any of his masters who pays him."The family is said to be currently at their native place in Saharanpur, where the last rites were conducted.The DCP said that a diary, said to be written by Aqil, his social media posts, mobile phone, and yet-to-be-received viscera report will be examined in this case. "It is reiterated that the investigation shall be conducted with an open mind and without any prejudice, ensuring that no guilty person is spared and no innocent person suffers," she added.On Tuesday itself another purported video surfaced on social media in which Aqil purportedly says: "Last year, I spotted a video in which I said things I do not even want to repeat. It was all due to my mental illness. I was suffering from schizophrenia. Thanks to Allah, my family members are the way they are. I am better now. I want to say sorry unconditionally.
