Pune: As the sun set on Monday, several Bengali associations in the city hosted Kali Puja, with celebrations extending late into the night. "On Monday evening, we celebrated Kali Puja at Parmar Hall in Salunke Vihar, which drew around 500 to 600 people," said Radhika Akolkar, a member of Anandam Association in Wanowrie. "We didn't organise any cultural event, but everyone was welcome to partake of the bhog, which comprised khichdi, labra, and bhaja. We observed a day-long fast, and even non-members who fasted joined us for the bhog after the puja, which started at 7:30 pm," she said. At Vimal Garden in Pimple Saudagar, members of Oikyotan Bangiya Parishad gathered for an evening of music, devotion, and delectable bhog. A musical night started at 8 pm, followed by the puja at 10 pm and bhog distribution comprising basanti pulao, beguni, alu-phulgopi roast, cholar dal, tomato chutney, simui er payesh, and papad. Most Kali Pujas organised across the city were scheduled to begin between 7:30pm and 10pm. Temples such as Khadki Kalibari and Dehu Road Kalibari also drew large crowds for their evening pujas, where devotees offered flowers and sweets to the goddess throughout the night. "Every year, our family visits the Kalibari temple in Khadki to celebrate Kali Puja together," said Abhiraj Mukherjee, a resident of Baner. "We go to offer our prayers, light incense and diyas, and participate in the rituals honouring the goddess. After the puja, we receive bhog, which usually comprises khichdi, labra, bhaja, and sometimes sweets. Visiting the temple is an opportunity for our family to come together, reflect, and feel connected to our heritage," said Mukherjee. Adding a unique touch to the celebrations, members of the "Bengalis in Pune" Facebook group facilitated the availability of 'choddo shaak', 14 varieties of leafy greens traditionally cooked on Kali Puja eve. Arun Chakroborty, representing Bengalis in Pune, said, "For Kali Puja this year, we distributed 1,200 packets of 'choddo shaak' across the city, a significant increase from 900 last year. Sourced directly from Kolkata, these packets reach every household observing the festival. A dedicated team of 40 volunteers coordinated the distribution with checkpoints in each area, as requests began pouring in since Durga Puja. Each 300-gram packet, priced at 100 rupees for a family of four, includes 'choddo shaak', celebrated for its health and purifying qualities. Gathering all these specific ingredients in one place is rare, making this offering central to the ritual."
