Chennai: With Diwali today, the city's streets fell unusually silent over the weekend. Major stretches such as Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road, and GST Road, saw little traffic this weekend as lakhs of residents left the city to celebrate the festival with their families, especially due to the long weekend stretching from Friday to Wednesday.By Sunday, the city eased into a slower rhythm. Markets and shopping areas, including T Nagar, that were busy through the week were less crowded. According to official data, more than 20 lakh people travelled out of Chennai over the past few days. Of them, 12 lakh took trains, 6.15 lakh used govt buses, and 1.5 lakh left in private cars.According to Tamil Nadu Omni Bus Owners Association president A Anbalagan, more than two lakh people travelled from Chennai to southern districts in private buses over the past four days. "It's only once a year that I get to see Purasawalkam without congestion. Usually, the shopping complexes and markets on Purasawalkam High Road are always crowded," said S Anand Kumar, a member of Voice of North Chennai Residents Welfare Association. "It feels nice to go shopping now with fewer people around," he added.To handle the massive rush, the TNSTC operated 20,378 special bus services from Chennai to various districts. Alongside the regular fleet of 2,092 buses, an additional 2,834 buses were deployed each day to cater to passengers heading to southern and western Tamil Nadu. Despite these arrangements, major bus stands such as Koyambedu, Madhavaram, and Tambaram were packed with passengers waiting for hours to board. The scene was similar at Chennai Central, Egmore, and Tambaram railway stations, where southbound trains were filled.Highways, including GST Road, witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic on Friday and Saturday, but by Sunday evening, Chennai became quieter as the city emptied for the festival of lights. Assistant commissioner of police N Raja said, "Although the city's traffic has reduced due to the long weekend and festivities, we have intensified night patrolling."
