Gurgaon: The first month of the burning season, which usually signals the start of north India's pollution build-up, has been unusually quiet this year.With just 25 incidents reported between Sept 15 and Oct 15, Haryana recorded its lowest early-season stubble burning numbers in five years, according to official data -- in a sharp decline from 559 cases during the same period last year. The decline -- over 95% compared to 2024 -- is credited to delayed harvesting, stricter enforcement and wider adoption of crop residue management (CRM) practices across the state.Year-wise data reflects how exceptional this year's decline is. Between Sept 15 and Oct 15, Haryana reported 702 fires in 2020, 850 in 2021, 168 in 2022, 542 in 2023 and 559 in 2024. This year's total is not only the lowest since 2020 but also far below the five-year average of around 560 incidents during the same period.Officials, however, warn that the trend could change quickly as harvesting gains pace in the next few weeks. A senior Haryana Pollution Control Board official said, "The numbers look promising, but the next 15 days will decide the real picture. Most central Haryana districts are still harvesting." Officials attribute the drop to multiple interventions. The agriculture department says thousands of CRM machines have been distributed to farmers and field surveillance has been intensified. "Around 80% of the paddy area is covered under residue management. Teams are on the ground monitoring through drones and satellite data to prevent early fires," an agriculture department official said.The state's major paddy-growing districts -- Karnal, Kaithal and Kurukshetra -- have reported just two cases combined this year. In the same period last year, these three districts together recorded over 230 incidents. Other traditionally high-burning districts have also shown steep drops: Ambala from 66 to 0, Fatehabad from 31 to 1, Hisar from 14 to 0, Jind from 47 to 9, Sonipat from 39 to 4, and Faridabad from 23 to 3. Districts such as Rewari, Mahendragarh, Charkhi Dadri and Mewat have reported zero cases so far this season.Experts believe the delayed withdrawal of the monsoon and slightly late paddy maturity have slowed harvesting, naturally curbing early-season fires. Research associate at Centre for Science and Environment Shubhansh Tiwari said, "We are likely seeing a time lag rather than a permanent drop. Once large-scale harvesting starts aftergra Oct 20, numbers could rise."Stubble burning remains a major seasonal contributor to air pollution in Delhi-NCR, especially during late Oct and Nov. Last year, Haryana accounted for nearly a quarter of all fire incidents in Punjab and Haryana combined. Officials said the early dip has provided temporary relief from crop-fire smoke that usually worsens air quality around Diwali. "If this low trend continues for another fortnight, it will be a significant achievement. But it's too early to celebrate," an HSPCB official said.While Haryana's early-season calm is encouraging, past trends show that fires often surge toward the end of Oct. The coming weeks will reveal whether this year marks a genuine shift in farm fire management or just a delayed start. For now, Haryana's fields are quieter than they've been in years -- but with harvesting about to peak, the state's real test in controlling stubble burning is only beginning.
