Sweet tooth, bitter truth: 69% households in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal hooked on sugar | Chandigarh News - The Times of India

Chandigarh: Despite the high prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), 69% households in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh have members addicted to sugar or sugary products, a national survey has found. The survey, which collected responses from 8,950 residents across the three northern states, revealed an alarming level of sugar dependence among households in a region already struggling with rising cases of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, particularly Punjab, which continues to record one of the highest burdens of lifestyle-related illnesses in the country.Health experts link the growing burden of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease to excessive consumption of sugar and processed foods. The findings underline the need for stronger public health campaigns, industrial reformulation of food products, and greater awareness about the health hazards of sugar addiction. In a region where lifestyle-related diseases are already widespread, reducing sugar intake remains a pressing public health priority. When asked what percentage of household members were addicted to sugar or sugary foods, 12% respondents said all members, 15% said 75-99%, 12% said 50-75%, 10% said 25-50%, and 20% said 1-25% of members. Only 16% said none were addicted, while 15% were unsure, meaning that nearly 69% of households acknowledged some level of sugar addiction. The survey also examined how often households consumed sweets. In terms of traditional Indian sweets, 9% reported consuming them daily, 31% reported consuming them 15-30 times a month, 33% reported consuming them 8-15 times, 12% reported consuming them 3-7 times, and 8% reported consuming them once or twice a month. Only 4% said they did not consume sweets at all. The pattern was similar for sweet bakery products and packaged items, including cakes, biscuits, ice cream, shakes, chocolates, and candies. About 11% respondents said they consumed them daily, 19% said 15-30 times a month, 18% said 8-15 times, 26% said 3-7 times, and 28% said once or twice a month. Just 3% reported not consuming such items. When asked whether they would switch to traditional sweets or packaged foods with 30% less sugar, 16% said they would "for sure", 14% said there was a high likelihood, 37% said low likelihood, 23% said no chance, and 10% were undecided. This shows that while roughly 30% of consumers are open to reducing sugar intake, a majority remain hesitant to change their consumption patterns.Commenting on the findings, Sachin Taparia, founder of LocalCircles, said the results should serve as a wake-up call for both consumers and manufacturers. He said at least 30% of urban households in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh would likely switch to 30% less sugar alternatives if quality traditional sweets or packaged foods, chocolates, biscuits, cakes, and ice creams with lower sugar were made available. "Even as sugar consumption continues to rise, awareness remains limited about the fact that foods high in seed oils and sugar contribute to diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. The least the industry can do is make more low-sugar options available to help reduce excessive sugar consumption," he said.
