Guwahati: The Agoratoli range of the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) officially reopened to the public on Saturday, marking the beginning of Kaziranga's new tourism calendar. The occasion also saw the inauguration of a 'meteka loom' -- a community-led initiative aimed at transforming invasive water hyacinth into sustainable handicrafts.According to park officials, the newly launched meteka loom at the Agoratoli community hall represents a significant milestone in both livelihood generation and environmental stewardship. It enables the production of over 100 varieties of eco-friendly handicrafts using water hyacinth, converting an ecological challenge into an entrepreneurial opportunity."Water hyacinth is an invasive aquatic weed and a major ecological concern in Kaziranga's wetlands. It spreads rapidly across water bodies, choking natural waterways, depleting oxygen levels, obstructing wildlife movement and local fishing activity, and severely degrading aquatic ecosystems. Tackling this fast-spreading menace is critical for biodiversity conservation and wetland restoration," said Sonali Ghosh, director of KNPTR.The Agoratoli range was inaugurated by agriculture minister Atul Bora and Kaziranga MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa.
