KOLKATA: At least four health personnel trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) will be deployed at Kolkata airport at any given time. CPR is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions and rescue breaths to help revive someone when their heart has stopped beating or they are not breathing.Altogether, 510 people working at the airport, including Airports Authority of India officials, immigration, domestic and international cargo officers, CISF officers, and airline staff, received the CPR training on Friday. Organised by airport health organisation (APHO) staff, passengers who had time at hand were also invited to join the training.Prompt CPR can significantly increase the chances of survival after a cardiac arrest by enabling oxygen-rich blood flow to the brain and other vital organs until professional help arrives or the person recovers."The programme aimed to raise awareness among passengers and staff of various airport stakeholders about the critical, lifesaving skill of CPR," said Kolkata airport director P R Beuria.CPR awareness sessions and demonstrations with hands-on training were held. A dedicated CPR kiosk has also been set up at the international arrival terminal. Leaflets on CPR were distributed to around 5,000 passengers."Timely CPR can save precious lives in emergency situations. Such awareness initiatives help equip both passengers and airport staff with vital lifesaving skills," said Dr Anoop Singh, public health specialist at APHO Kolkata.Immediate CPR can triple a person's chance of survival after a cardiac arrest. Quick intervention can minimise the risk of brain damage and other long-term disabilities. Knowing that trained personnel and resources are available gives passengers a greater sense of security while travelling.
