Mysuru: A report prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India, under Project Elephant of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change, has issued a serious warning to the Karnataka forest department about a growing threat to the state's elephant habitats. As per the 'Status of Elephants in India: DNA Based Synchronous All India Population Estimation of Elephants (SAIEE) 2021-25' report, the once-contiguous elephant populations of the Western Ghats are rapidly becoming disconnected due to changing land use patterns, including expanding commercial plantations of coffee and tea, invasive species, farmland fencing, human encroachment, and a surge in development projects. This fragmentation, the report warns, jeopardises habitat contiguity, making it essential to preserve connectivity that allows elephants to move freely without escalating conflicts.According to the report, while Karnataka harbours the largest population of wild elephants in India, it is also one of the country's major hotspots for human-elephant conflict. The human-elephant interface is high as the vast expanse of crop fields and plantations, and numerous human settlements are present inside as well as outside the ecological range of elephants. Apart from human-elephant conflicts, the majority of the elephant habitats in the state are facing issues with increasing human populations and encroachment of wildlife habitats, said the report.The report highlights that reserves such as Kali, Bhadra, and the habitats in the Mysuru plateau experience forest fragmentation challenges posed by the increasing human footprint. Large numbers of cattles, which occupy the majority of the prime locations, aggravate the competition for resources as well as the risk of disease transmission. Development projects, especially the linear infrastructure projects, pose another major threat across the landscape and cause numerous elephant mortalities.It also highlighted that the contiguous forests of Nagarhole, Bandipur, and BRT Hills face the threat of spreading invasive species, frequent forest fires, and increasing pressure from upcoming development projects. Additionally, plantations of Acacia auriculiformis and Eucalyptus citriodora, and the spread of invasive alien species like Lantana camara, Senna spectabilis, and Chromolaena odorata have affected the vegetation of the area, the report cautioned.Sources in the forest department acknowledged that the issues raised in the report are not new. "But unless the forest department formulates a dedicated master plan and adopts scientific approaches -- without succumbing to political and local pressures, it will be difficult to protect the elephant corridors," explained an officer.Meanwhile, activists have blamed the forest department for the menace of the invasive alien species inside the thick forests. According to former member of the State Wildlife Board, Joseph Hoover, the current mitigation plans raise several suspicions. "For example, Lantana was used to prepare various craft items. But in the end, the locals, especially tribals, didn't get any profit out of it. Ideally, the wood collected from eradicating Senna spectabilis in Bandipur and Nagarahole could be stockpiled in govt timber yards. The govt itself could sell it to briquette units or paper mills. The revenue could support forest protection, but the forest department hasn't taken such steps," he alleged.
