Nagpur: The death toll in the toxic cough syrup, Coldrif, rose to 24 after the death of four-year-old girl, Ambika Vishwakarma, who battled for life for over a month at a private hospital in Nagpur early Wednesday.The Vishwakarma family, from Kakai Bhilwa village under Chourai tehsil in Chhindwara, lives around 60km southeast of Parasia block, a hotspot for Coldrif-related child deaths.The syrup, found to contain high levels of diethylene glycol (DEG), has led to multiple child fatalities. Two children, 3.5-year-old Kunal Yaduwanshi and 4-year-old Harsh Yaduwanshi, also from Chhindwara district, remain in critical condition at AIIMS Nagpur.Ambika's uncle, Madanpal Vishwakarma, stated that the family learned about the DEG contamination in Coldrif around Sept 22. She was administered the syrup on Sept 13 for fever and cough. Although Ambika could not survive the toxicity, her 10-year-old brother, Om, and 9-year-old sister, Gungun, survived after receiving syrup from the same bottle in Sept first week. Their kidney tests were normal after the syrup's poisonous nature was revealed.Ambika's father, Shripal Vishwakarma, a small-time carpenter, incurred a bill of Rs13 lakh in the treatment, of which the family paid Rs6 lakh. The MP govt has assured the hospital will cover the remaining amount. A postmortem was conducted at the Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday, and her samples were sent to FSL Nagpur for analysis.GMCH officials reported that the postmortem findings matched those of other children from Chhindwara who died after taking Coldrif. "Histopathological samples of all the children too are under study and the report is expected in 10 days," officials said.Dr Ashish Lothe, part of Ambika's treatment team, described her as a fighter. "She pulled off almost two weeks after her kidneys showed improvement. She was on ventilator support for a month which is a long time for a child. We feel bad that so far no child in the tragedy could survive despite our best efforts," he said. "Her vitals like blood pressure, pulse, and heart rate were continuously fluctuating and didn't stabilise. The swelling on her brain led to multi-organ failure. Around 1 am her body temperature dropped and there was no pulse," he added.Madanpal Vishwakarma said health inspectors visited his home at Chandangaon to collect two bottles of Coldrif from his brother Shripal's family in Nagpur with Ambika. The syrup bottle label indicated it was from same batch (no. 13), manufactured in May 2025 by Tamil Nadu-based Sresan Pharmaceuticals Ltd. "She developed a cough and fever on September 14. She was given the syrup based on Om and Gungun's prescription. We purchased two bottles of the cough syrup as we don't have a medical store in the village. Two days later, she complained of stomach pain and no passage of urine. She was taken to the same doctor who treated Om and Gungun. He referred us to Nagpur," he said.He added that murmurs about the spate of deaths among Chhindwara children made them suspicious, but by then it was too late.Chhindwara police reported that no separate FIR has been filed in this case as they are busy investigating the Sresan owner, G Ranganthan, who has left for Tamil Nadu.
Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police have arrested Nikita Singhania, the wife Atul Subash who died by suicide, along with her mother, Visha Singhania, and brother, Anurag Singhania, in connection with an abetment of suicide case.
