Chandigarh: Punjab, still recovering from the devastation caused by the recent floods, is now battling an alarming surge in vector-borne diseases. Data from the health department shows that the positivity rate of dengue, which was around 3.8% so far this year, spiked to over 11.5% in October -- nearly a threefold rise following the floods.The floods -- the worst in Punjab in decades -- ravaged nearly 2,300 villages across the state, affecting over 4 lakh people and claiming 55 lives. Water stood in over 1.7 hectares of farmland for days. Health experts have cautioned that stagnant water, debris accumulation and disrupted sanitation systems create the ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other vectors, significantly increasing the risk of dengue and chikungunya outbreaks.An analysis of health department data revealed that from Jan to Oct 11, 42,090 samples were tested for dengue, of which 1,616 came positive. However, in just the first 11 days of October, 522 of 4,529 samples tested positive. Eleven districts recorded positivity rates higher than the state average.District-wise data shows Bathinda leading with a 39.61% positivity rate (61 of 154 samples), followed by Fazilka at 32.74% (55 of 168), Barnala at 23.15% (25 of 108), Mohali at 22.50% (18 of 353), Moga at 22.22% (10 of 45), and Ludhiana at 20.31% (52 of 256).Urban areas accounted for a larger share of the disease burden, reporting 922 cases (nearly 58%). However, several districts recorded higher infection rates in rural belts. In Tarn Taran, 74.2% cases originated in rural areas, while rural Hoshiarpur accounted for 72%, Gurdaspur 70.3%, Pathankot 69.8%, and Kapurthala 63.1% of total reported cases.The data also showed an uptick in chikungunya cases. Of 665 samples tested in October, 50 were positive, recording a positivity rate of 7.5%, higher than the 7% recorded during the same period in 2024. In all, 136 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the state so far this year.Medical experts note that dengue symptoms typically appear five to six days after the bite of an Aedes aegypti mosquito and include sudden high fever, severe headache, eye pain, and muscle and joint pain. In chikungunya, symptoms usually develop within three to seven days and include fever, joint pain, headache, muscle discomfort, swelling, and rashes. While dengue rashes are commonly confined to the limbs and face, chikungunya can cause rashes across the face, palms, and feet.In response to the challenges arising in the wake of the floods, the health department intensified anti-mosquito operations across affected districts. Fogging drives, inspections, and door-to-door awareness campaigns have been ramped up in both rural and urban areas. To further strengthen preventive efforts, the department has also supplemented routine fogging carried out by urban local bodies and rural development departments.All district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, and community health centres have been instructed to immediately procure fogging machines. Civil Surgeons have been directed to ensure prompt orders for the equipment, with funds already released and provisions made for additional allocations if required. Testing and treatment for dengue and chikungunya are being provided free of cost at all govt health facilities.
