Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin said AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami's attempts to pin the the responsibility for Karur stampede on the ruling DMK reflected his desperation for forging an alliance. Stalin said EPS would not have voiced a strong opposition even if his own party cadres were affected. "His speech is an attempt to find new allies," he said without mentioning TVK. While he mentioned TVK on a couple of other occasions during the speech, Stalin chose not to mention TVK president Vijay throughout the debate."Even if the AIADMK forms a 'mega' or 'maha' alliance, it will not benefit him, as the people of Tamil Nadu will deliver a fair verdict," Stalin said. Stalin's response was for the allegations levelled by EPS that the stampede was due to 'govt negligence' and police mismanagement. Stalin said though the Opposition claimed that they are not politicising the issue, EPS was deliberately floating conspiracy theories. "They came with a clear plan to create ruckus in the House. I wonder whether Palaniswami would speak this way if something happened to his own party cadre," Stalin said, adding that his remarks clearly pointed to political motives. EPS retorted asking why was the Chief Minister 'agitated' when questions were raised about Karur stampede. EPS said they were not politicising the issue but were only raising legitimate questions on behalf of the people. His comment drew strong reactions from the treasury benches. Intervening, Leader of the House Duraimurugan said the CM had given a detailed statement on the govt's actions following the tragedy and said EPS should not politicise the matter. Visibly agitated, Palaniswami said it was the chief minister who was giving political colour to his concern for the victims. "Is there no hidden agenda in this," he asked, questioning why senior bureaucrats and police officers held a press conference despite a one-man commission being constituted. Responding, Stalin said such briefings were not new and were intended to quell rumours circulating on social media. He recalled similar press interactions during the Covid-19 pandemic and when former Chief Ministers M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa were hospitalised. He also cited his own briefing following the Tuticorin police firing, even when a commission headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan had been appointed.
