New Delhi: The Supreme Court's decision to permit the sale and bursting of green crackers in Delhi-NCR has left the residents divided. While many welcomed the move, saying it represents a long-awaited return to tradition, others were wary it could worsen the situation in a city that is perpetually struggling to contain pollution, especially during the Oct-Nov period."It's Diwali after all. For one day, Delhiites should get to celebrate the festival the way they want. Besides, it's just green crackers," said Naveen Garg, member of the MIG Apartments RWA, Rohini. He added that children in his neighbourhood were particularly thrilled, eager to experience what they see as the "real" Diwali -- one filled with the sparkle and sound of fireworks.Ajay Gupta from the Laxmi Nagar RWA, said SC's ruling was a "pragmatic step" that acknowledged ground realities. "Despite the blanket ban, people used to burn crackers anyway -- either buying them from dubious sources or using leftovers from previous years," he said. The latest relaxation, he added, removes the pretence of compliance and can lead to "a more responsible celebration".However, there are many who disagree. Some residential bodies voiced concern that even green crackers, designed to emit fewer pollutants, could leave Delhi's air quality poorer. "Govt has consistently raised awareness about the harm caused by firecrackers but failed to enforce a complete ban across NCR during Diwali. How will they verify if the crackers being lit are green?" he said.Gandhi warned the approval will be misused, as the more harmful but cheaper crackers will be labelled 'eco-friendly' and find willing customers.
