Jaipur: Tuesday night's tragedy on Jaipur-Ajmer NH-48 has once again exposed the lethal combination of unsafe roadside parking, hazardous goods transport, and weak enforcement on one of Rajasthan's most vital freight corridors.While an investigation is underway to probe the reason behind the collision of a chemical-laden tanker with a truck carrying LPG cylinders, sources said the probe is focused on the immediate cause of the crash, not on the chronic road safety hazards on this highway. "The combination of low visibility, fatigue, and speeding at night makes it extremely difficult for drivers to spot parked trucks. This may have played a role in the latest accident," said a senior police official. In Dec last year, a similar collision between an LPG tanker and another truck led to an inferno that killed over 20 people on this highway. Little has changed since that tragedy. Tankers carrying flammable chemicals and trucks loaded with LPG cylinders continue to park dangerously close to each other along the highway. "There is no segregation, no buffer zone, and no checks. One small spark can cause a chain explosion," said an official. The situation is compounded by the absence of specialised firefighting infrastructure. Despite heavy movement of LPG, petroleum, and chemical tankers, NH-48 lacks rapid-access hydrants, foam systems, and trained emergency crews at regular intervals.
