Chennai: The Director General of Police (DGP)'s office on Wednesday responded to an email sent by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Tuesday, seeking permission and police protection for party president Vijay's proposed visit to Karur to meet the families of those who died in the stampede on September 27.In its reply, the DGP's office instructed the TVK to nominate a representative to coordinate with the Karur district superintendent of police (SP) regarding arrangements for the visit. The party has been asked to provide details such as the date, time, venue, route, and agenda of the proposed programme. A senior officer in the DGP's office confirmed the email reply sent to the TVK office-bearer.The DGP's office stated that once these details are submitted, appropriate action will be taken after assessing security, transportation, and precautionary measures required for the event.The planned visit follows the tragic stampede at Velayuthapalayam in Karur during a TVK campaign on September 27, which resulted in the death of 41 people. Following the incident, the Karur district police arrested TVK district office-bearer Mathialagan and another party worker in connection with the case, while party senior functionaries Bussy N Anand and CTR Nirmal Kumar were booked by the police.While the state govt announced a compensation of '10 lakh for each victim's family, Vijay announced an additional '20 lakh compensation from his side. The actor-turned-politician recently spoke to the victims' families via video call and has since expressed his intention to meet them in person.
