Kolkata: The city received 50% excess rain in Sept and recorded a seasonal excess of 23%. The city received a phenomenal 465 mm of rain last month against a normal count of 311 mm. Light rain is expected to continue until at least Oct 10, said the Met office. Sunday could be cloudy with intermittent showers even as the city hosts the Durga Puja Carnival.Though the monsoon still lingers in south Bengal and rain could continue, the period between June 1 and Sept 30 is taken to be the monsoon period. The deluge on Sept 23 that triggered 252 mm of rain -- the sixth highest single-day rain ever recorded in Kolkata -- pushed last month's rain count way above normal. Last month's total rain count was possibly the highest recorded in Sept in at least a decade, which also took the seasonal rain count past the normal mark. Kolkata's seasonal count (June 1-Sept 30) exceeded the normal mark by 23% while south Bengal ended the season with an excess of 8%.Meteorologists said while rainfall was uniformly above normal or around the normal mark throughout the monsoon, the second half of Sept saw three successive low-pressure systems that developed into depressions, triggering heavy rain. "This helped swell the rain count further. Even though the last two systems headed towards Odisha and north Andhra, the first one passed through Kolkata triggering heavy rain. The cloud mass remained static over Kolkata for seven hours early on Sept 23 and caused 98 mm of rain in an hour, which was just 2 mm short of qualifying as a cloudburst. It was followed by two more low-pressures that formed on Sept 26 and 30, respectively, but they moved in the opposite direction towards Odisha. They still had an impact on Kolkata, which was evident from the intermittent showers received during the pujas," said RMC weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.South Bengal, however, received 230.2 mm of rain in Sept, which is 13% below normal. The 'convective' or rain-triggering belt of the low-pressure system on Sept 23 was focused on Kolkata, said Bandopadhyay. ," added Banerjee.Even the Amphan rain count was less than the rain count of Sept 23, pointed out weather scientists. Meanwhile, the depression that formed on Sept 30 moved north-northwestwards across interior Odisha and north Chhattisgarh and was set to weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure over the next 24 hours, said an RMC bulletin. It added that all parts of south Bengal will continue to receive light rain and thunderstorms, with heavy rain lashing some parts, including Murshidabad.
