New Delhi: PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has issued an apology to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the controversial scenes that followed the Asia Cup final on Sunday, September 28. According to India Today, Naqvi took more conciliatory approach during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting after the controversy, which saw him deny the Indian team the chance to celebrate their triumph with the trophy on the field. According to sources, Naqvi conveyed his regret to the BCCI, acknowledging the post-final events should not have escalated as they did. During the final, after the Indian players declined to accept the trophy and medals directly from him, the ACC chief called off the traditional presentation ceremony. He then directed ACC officials to take the trophy and medals off the field entirely. At the ACC meeting on Tuesday, September 30, the BCCI strongly criticised Naqvi's actions in the trophy row. Vice-president Rajeev Shukla, who attended the meeting, emphasised that the Asia Cup trophy is the property of the ACC and not the PCB chairman. He slammed Naqvi for taking the trophy and medals from the venue to his hotel room without following proper handover procedures. Shukla emphasized that the trophy should be officially handed to the victorious team India, captained by Suryakumar Yadav, ands should remain in the ACC's custody immediately afterward Earlier, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia criticised the actions of the ACC chief ans said, "We have decided not to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the senior leaders of Pakistan. That was a conscious decision," Saikia said. "This does not give him the right to take the trophy and the medals with him. It is extremely unfortunate and unsportsmanlike. We hope the trophy and medals will be returned to India as soon as possible," he had added. Although Naqvi apologised to the BCCI, he stood his ground and declined to return the trophy to the Indian team. He insisted that if India wanted the trophy, the captain would need to personally visit the ACC office in Dubai to collect it. The BCCI promptly dismissed the demand, questioning why the Indian captain should travel to Dubai to collect the trophy when no such requirement existed on the night of the final.
