New Delhi Oct 1 (UNI) India celebrated a double gold at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 as reigning Paralympic champion Sumit Antil clinched his third straight world title in the men's F64 javelin throw, while Sandip Singh Sargar topped the podium in F44 category. According to the Olympics.com, India's Sumit Antil and Sandip Singh Sargar lit up the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 in New Delhi yesterday with gold-medal performances in the F64 and F44 men's javelin throw finals, respectively. The website reported, "With former Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra in attendance at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Sumit Antil chased down the championship record to win the gold medal with a distance of 71.37m on his fifth attempt." He had three throws beyond the 65m in a field where Colombia's Tomas Felipe Soto Mina won the silver medal with an effort of 48.38m, the report added. It marked Antil's third consecutive world championship crown following triumphs in Paris 2023, where he set a world record of 70.83m, and Kobe 2024, where he won gold with an effort of 69.50m. Earlier, Sandip Singh Sargar claimed gold in the men's F44 javelin throw, narrowly edging fellow Indian Sandeep, who settled for silver with 62.67m. "Sargar's winning throw measured 62.82m, while Brazil's Edenilson Roberto took bronze, setting a F42 world record of 62.36m on his final attempt. Unlike previous editions, where F42-44 were combined with F64, the F42-44 event was contested separately this year," it read. Field athletes in the F42-44 classes have lower limb impairments and compete without prostheses, while those in the F61-64 classes also have lower limb deficiencies but can compete using prostheses. Last year, Sumit Antil became the first Indian male para-athlete to defend his title in the Paralympics. Highlighting yesterday's match, it said, "India's Yogesh Kathuniya won the silver medal in the men's discus throw F56 final with an effort of 42.49m. Brazil's Claudiney Batista won the gold medal with a throw of 45.67m while Greek athlete Konstantinos Tzounis settled for bronze with an effort of 39.97m." With four gold, four silver and a bronze, India are now fourth on the World Para Athletics medals tally. Rinku Hooda and Sundar Singh Gurjar won the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the men's javelin throw F46 class on Monday. "The 12th edition of the World Para Athletic Championships features more than 2000 athletes from 104 nations competing across 186 medal events. India have sent a 73-member team, featuring 54 men and 19 women. The competition will conclude on October 5," Olympics.com concluded.
