Jaipur: At least a dozen NSUI functionaries were detained, and several were lathi charged when they protested a 'Shastra Puja' ahead of Dussehra celebrations at the University of Rajasthan Tuesday evening. The program was organised by ABVP, where senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Nimbaram was scheduled to attend as the chief guest. As part of the protest, functionaries from both organisations clashed as police lathi-charged them in pouring rain. Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully said, "Lathi-charging NSUI leaders at the University of Rajasthan, vandalising their vehicles, and arresting them for protesting the hate-filled politics of the BJP and RSS is highly condemnable. I want to ask the chief minister not to turn these temples of learning into arenas of politics. All detained NSUI functionaries should be released with immediate effect."NSUI state president Vinod Jakhar said that NSUI workers held a peaceful protest, opposing the RSS's communal ideology, and went to the venue to remove their banners and posters. "NSUI firmly believes that universities should be centres of knowledge, scientific thinking, and inclusive ideology -- not a platform for political or communal organisation.
