Jaipur: Rajasthan tops the list of states with the highest number of rape cases and economic offences in the country, the 'Crime in India 2023' report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Tuesday reveals.Date released by the NCRB shows 5,194 cases of rape reported across the state in 2023. Among these cases, 2,152 were registered by friends, live-in partners, and separated husbands, while 2,444 cases were registered by family members and employers. A small set of 120 cases was lodged by unidentified persons.The state's top cop, however, clarified that these statistics reflect only the total number of cases registered, and not to the number of cases that proceed to the filing of chargesheets and final prosecution. "We have a fair system of registration of cases involving crimes against women, including rape". Rajiv Sharma, Rajasthan Director General of Police, said. "However, a good percentage of these cases are found to be false upon investigation, while others are withdrawn. Our data makes it clear that many of these cases are lodged solely with the intent of blackmail and extortion," he added. According to Sharma, only 53% of cases involving crimes against women end up in chargesheets being filed. "This shows that 47% of the cases are found to be false," Sharma said.In terms of total rape cases registered, Rajasthan is followed by Uttar Pradesh (3,556), Madhya Pradesh (2,979), Maharashtra (2,932), and Haryana (1,772).With a total of 45,450 cases filed, Rajasthan ranks third in the list of states with the highest reported crimes against women. Uttar Pradesh leads the roster with 66,381 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 47,101 .The second category of cases that Rajasthan tops the list pertains to economic offences. In 2023, the state registered 27,765 cases of various economic offences, followed closely by Telangana with 26,881 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 23,428 cases, and Maharashtra with 19,803 cases."The percentage of these cases that lead to chargesheets being filed is just 14.6%", DGP Sharma said while NCRB data. "A lot of these cases stem from property disputes which are either withdrawn or settled out of court", he added.
