Gurgaon: Haryana has closed this monsoon season with its highest rainfall in three years. It has recorded a 70% surplus over the long-term average, according to IMD data.At 129.2 mm against a normal of 77.2 mm, 2025 stands out not just for the statewide numbers but also for the intensity of Sept showers that tipped the balance. In 2023, rainfall stood at 43mm (-44%) while in 2024, it was 105.7mm (37%). Officials at the meteorological centre noted that the late-season bursts were unusual. An IMD scientist said, "Most of the surplus came in the last fortnight of Sept, when several districts recorded back-to-back spells of moderate to heavy rain."Meteorologists said the surplus will reflect in groundwater and reservoir levels, offering some relief ahead of the rabi season. Yet they cautioned that Haryana's rainfall pattern remains erratic. "Three deficit years followed by one surplus year does not indicate stability. The overall variability is increasing," an IMD scientist added. Prior to the last three years, Haryana experienced relatively normal rainfall. However, the state saw repeated deficits over the past 25 years. Data from 2000 to 2025 shows multiple shortfalls: 2001 saw just 12.8 mm (88% below normal), 2004 received 21.6 mm (76% deficit) and 2020 recorded 24.8 mm (69% below average). Some years had above-average rainfall: 2010 logged 183.9 mm (108% above normal), 2005 had 163.8 mm (85% surplus) and 2021 recorded 187.5 mm (135% above normal). In this context, 2025's Sept surge of 129.2 mm, 70% above the long-term average, marks the highest rainfall in the state for the month in recent decades. District-wise, Panchkula recorded the highest rainfall (118% above normal) while Gurgaon too received above normal rainfall (42%). The excess rainfall had mixed effects. South Haryana, including Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Nuh, recorded heavy showers, causing urban waterlogging and traffic snarls. Farmers welcomed the boost to groundwater and fodder crops but reported damage to standing paddy in low-lying fields.District-wise, rainfall in 2025 showed wide variation: Ambala received 219.4 mm (55% above normal), Bhiwani 108.6 mm (128% surplus), Fatehabad 140.5 mm (184% above), Hisar 138.6 mm (153% surplus) and Kurukshetra 210 mm (176% above normal). Panchkula recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 332.1 mm, while Sirsa saw an exceptional 119.2 mm, 253% above its usual level. Some districts, however, recorded below-normal rainfall: Faridabad logged 90.3 mm (-21%) and Karnal 96.2 mm (-1%). Gurgaon received 115.7 mm.Meanwhile, Ayanagar in south-west Delhi recorded 71.2mm, while precipitation at Palam measured 21.8mm, Ridge 29.8mm, Rajghat 40.5mm, Pusa 36mm and Mayur Vihar, 35mm.
