Bathinda: A protest staged by farmer organisation BKU Ekta Sidhupur, concerning action against farmers for burning crop residue, was lifted late on Tuesday after Bathinda deputy commissioner Rajesh Dhiman reached the site and assured the arrangement of an adequate number of crop residue management (CRM) machines to manage stubble. He also assured that the police were looking into the old cases of stubble burning, and that all issues would be sorted out amicably. The farmers announced that they would wait for a few days, and if the CRM machinery was not provided, they would resort to protests again.The farmers had started the protest on Monday over strict actions being taken against those burning crop residue in their fields, including the registration of FIRs, red entries in their land records, and the imposition of environmental compensation. They demanded a cash incentive as directed by the Supreme Court in 2019 for stubble management.BKU Ekta Sidhupur vice president Kaka Singh Kotda stated, "Farmers do not want to burn crop residue, but they are forced to burn it as many of the farmers are not in a position to manage it.
